Chyulu Hills: green volcanic hills between Tsavo and Amboseli, with Kilimanjaro across the plain on clear mornings. Walks, horse rides and some of the best views in southern Kenya, in small lodges with few guests.

Kerio Valley: the edge of the Elgeyo escarpment, where the land drops away to the valley floor. Walks along the escarpment, waterfalls, and in good conditions the chance to watch paragliders launch. Cool nights and an early start back.

Lake Baringo: a freshwater lake known for birdlife, hippos and crocodiles, best seen from a boat at dawn. Pair it with Lake Bogoria’s hot springs and, in some seasons, flamingos.
